Located on Stones River, Murfreesboro is a county seat of Rutherford County, in the Nashville-Davidson metro area. The community was named after an officer of the Revolutionary War, Hardy Murfree.

Murfreesboro is home to Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU), the largest undergraduate university in the state of Tennessee. The city covers a total area of 101.5 km² (39.2 mi²) of which 101.0 km² (39.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it (0.54%) is water. A stone monument marks the official site on Old Lascassas Pike, about a half-mile (800m) north of MTSU.
