Johnson City is a city in Washington County and a small part of the city is located within Sullivan County, Tennessee, to the northeast and Carter County, Tennessee, to the southeast. The community was named after the first mayor, Henry Johnson. Located in the Appalachian Mountains, Johnson City covers a total area of 102.5 km² (39.6 mi²). 101.7 km² (39.3 mi²) of it is land and 0.8 km² (0.3 mi²) of it (0.78%) is water.
