Agriculture was the main occupation of the people of Tennessee till industries like chemicals, textiles and metal products took over in the 20th century. Tennessee is situated in the eastern south-central US. Tennessee ranks 34th in size among the 50 states covering a total area of 42,144 sq mi (109,152 sq km), of which land occupies 41,155 sq mi (106,591 sq km) and inland water 989 sq mi (2,561 sq km).
Tennessee is bordered on the North by Kentucky and Virginia; on the East by North Carolina; on the South by Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi; and on the West by Arkansas and Missouri.
